Transition to Independence

A Mobility Solution for the Journey Home

Leaving rehabilitation is a major milestone but accessing transportation safely and confidently can be one of the biggest challenges after discharge.

The Transition to Independence Program from Superior Van & Mobility provides temporary access to a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, giving individuals and families time to adjust, recover, and determine the best long-term mobility solution for their needs.

Recover. Adapt. Decide with Confidence.

The Challenge

Many individuals leaving an inpatient rehabilitation facility are entering a new phase of life that comes with uncertainty.

Questions often include:

  • Will a wheelchair-accessible vehicle be necessary long term?
  • Which vehicle configuration is the best fit?
  • Can family members safely assist with transportation?
  • Will an accessible vehicle fit daily routines and lifestyle needs?
  • Should a vehicle be purchased immediately or after more recovery progress is made?

Making a permanent vehicle purchase during a significant life transition can feel overwhelming.

The Transition to Independence Program is designed to provide time, flexibility, and confidence before making a long-term mobility decision.

How the Program Works

Step 1: Consultation

A Superior Van & Mobility Rental Consultant works with the patient, family, caregivers, and discharge team to determine transportation needs and identify the best vehicle option for the transition period.

Step 2: Take the Vehicle Home

The participant receives a wheelchair-accessible van for a 7-day rental term.
The vehicle can be used for:

  • Medical appointments
  • Therapy visits
  • Community outings
  • Work and school transportation
  • Everyday activities

Step 3: Evaluate Real-Life Mobility Needs

Families gain valuable experience using the vehicle in everyday situations.

This allows participants to evaluate:

  • Side-entry vs. rear-entry accessibility
  • Caregiver assistance requirements
  • Wheelchair positioning and comfort
  • Parking and garage accessibility
  • Long-term transportation needs

Step 4: Renew or Purchase

At the end of the rental term, participants can:

  • Return the vehicle
  • Renew the rental period (7 days at a time)
  • Purchase a wheelchair-accessible vehicle

Qualified participants can receive up to $1,000 in rental credits applied toward the purchase of an accessible vehicle.

Program Benefits:

Avoid Rushed Decisions: Recovering from an injury, illness, or medical event can be overwhelming. This program provides time to make informed decisions without pressure.

Experience Real Life Before Buying: A short dealership demonstration can only reveal so much. Living with a vehicle for several weeks allows families to evaluate how it truly fits their lifestyle.

Support During Recovery: Reliable transportation helps patients attend follow-up appointments, therapy sessions, and community activities that support continued recovery.

Family and Caregiver Confidence: Caregivers have the opportunity to learn how to safely transport and assist their loved ones before committing to a long-term vehicle solution.

Flexible Path Forward: Whether mobility needs improve, remain unchanged, or evolve, participants have options that adapt to their circumstances.
